What do Wopilkara eat?

The Wopilkara, also known as the greater stick-nest rat, is a rodent species native to Australia. Primarily found in Southern and Western Australia, their specific diets can vary depending on their habitat and location.

While Wopilkara can survive with little to no access to fresh water, they need a lot of water to survive the extreme temperatures in their chosen habitat. For this reason, they eat a number of plants with high water content, such as the bladder saltbush. Other species like native, burrowing bettongs and invasive rabbits also favour these plants.

Wopilkara are herbivorous, meaning they eat a variety of plant-based foods, including:

Leaves and Stems: They also eat leaves and stems from various plants, preferring succulents and semi-succulents. These can provide them with essential nutrients and moisture.

Fruits: Fruits are another important food source for many rodent species, including the Wopilkara. Depending on the availability of fruits in season, they may feed on a diverse variety throughout the year.

Grasses: Wopilkara have also been known to eat a small variety of grasses.
